Kaligo Phonics
Build Strong Reading Foundations with the Kaligo Phonics Programme
At Kaligo, we believe phonics is one of the most effective ways to teach children how to read and spell. That’s why we have developed a phonics programme based on the “Letters and Sounds” scheme published by the British Department for Education.
Phonics with Kalicat integrates interactivity, engagement, and writing into our soon-to-be-launched, English-aligned curriculum, covering both KS1 and KS2. Designed by teachers, for teachers, our programme is built around five key principles for effective phonics instruction.
Phonics and Decoding: The Key to Literacy Success
Phonics is a foundational skill in reading, where young learners connect sounds (phonemes) with letters (graphemes) to enable accurate pronunciation and comprehension. As children progress, they build on this foundation by developing essential decoding skills, such as blending and segmenting sounds. These abilities are key to reading fluently and spelling accurately as they advance in their literacy journey.
The Scaffolded UK Phonics Programme
With our scaffolded UK phonics programme, students will learn to:
Recognise sounds and link them to letters
Blend sounds to form words
Segment sounds to write words
Progressively master complex spelling and reading rules
Outcome: Confident and Skilled Readers and Writers
With the Kaligo phonics programme, children can grow their reading and spelling skills step by step, giving them the confidence to enjoy reading and writing for life.
How It Works?
In phase one, students will meet Kalicat, a friendly and adventurous character who will guide them through engaging activities that develop their listening and speaking skills.
From phase two onwards, the structure of each lesson allows for repetition and reinforcement of learning. Each lesson generally includes the following steps:
1
Introduction
The lesson and learning intentions are introduced.
Revision
Students review previously taught graphemes and phonemes.
2
3
New lesson
The children learn a new grapheme (phases 2 to 5), new pronunciations for the same grapheme (phase 5), or more complex spelling rules (phase 6).
Practice
Students practise recognising the newly learned phonemes and graphemes, using their new knowledge to blend and read, segment and write. They gradually read and write captions and sentences using tricky words and words made up of the taught graphemes.

What is Kaligo Phonics?
Based on the “Letters and Sounds” scheme published by the Department for Education, our programme is divided into six phases. While phase one sets the foundation for phases two to six, the latter progress from simple to more complex sound-spellings.
